Appalachian mountain dulcimer players- make friends & your own dulcimer web page

Lisa's excellent video on noter basics has inspired me to elaborate on the different ways, and the whys and wherefores, of holding the noter. I get a little long winded and tongue tied at times. Here is a companion slideshow demonstrating some of the principles.

You explained it perfectly Suzanne! Like you I just started holding the noter that-a-way. I think it's just the body doing it's natural thing for some people. Thx for telling me that... now I don't hafta think I'm doing something wrong either!...b/c as far as I know it's just you & me baby!... : )....

I was so glad to find this video, Randy! I have been trying noter playing during the past month. I had tried the index finger on top and then the thumb on top, and without even consciously doing it, I had begun to hold the noter just like you do in this video - the "side-by-side" method, as you call it.

With my thumb on top, I found that I just had too much of my hand under the noter (if that makes sense), and I was scraping over the top of the dulcimer with my hand. With the index finger on top, I felt I was not able to control the noter as well.

I have probably explained this poorly, but yesterday I found your video, and I realized by watching that I had started holding the noter exactly as you do. Thanks for the video and the explanation! Now I don't have to feel like I am doing something "wrong"! :-)

Your welcome. I don't give music lessons to anyone & it makes me feel good to know you think the vid is helpful & I may be doing my little part to help the cause.

Thank you for taking the time to put together this video. This really addressed some of the questions I had about using the noter........

Randy,
Thank you for your video on noter play. Between you and Lisa's advice I hope to get this noter drone
technique down better.

Your video will encourage more folks to hang with noter play long enough to explore the nuances of what happens physically when noting tunes. I'm hoping so, anyway. Fine noter play is called for by lots of great tunes. :)

I don't know about an art form but there's a little kinesiology in there somewhere huh? Glad you think it's helpful. Quite allright to post it wherever you want.

Wow Randy, you've got it down to an art form! Some great helpful stuff there.
I hope you don't mind that I added a link to your demo on my noter blog post about holding and positioning noters. :)

I have a main blog for Traditional style mountain dulcimer playing here: Mountain Dulcimer Noter-drone Blog This is an old style of playing where you only fret your notes on the melody string, while letting the drones strings ring open. In my blog, I express my personal views about playing, I offer free TAB and free beginner videos, and I try to help beginners understand in a very basic simple way the 'mysteries' of playing the mountain dulcimer in traditional modal noter/drone style.
