Appalachian mountain dulcimer players- make friends, share, learn to play- Free!

Hi Everyone!

I have another place I'm interested in knowing how the mountain dulcimer scene is there. That place would be Abingdon, VA. Does anyone know if there are instructors there, gatherings, workshops, etc??? Are there any Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer from Abingdon?  Please let me know if anyone has any thoughts on this.

Thanks! And, enjoy your day!

I just moved from Marion, which is 20 miles up I-81 from Abingdon--wish I were still there.  Anyhoo, Bobby is correct--there is a group of players down around Kingsport.  They often play at gatherings/festivals at the Exchange Place, a.k.a. Gaines-Preston Farm, in Kingsport, which is into NE Tennessee--which is, as Booby says, around 30 minutes S of Abingdon.  If you check out the website, you might find a reference to the folks.  They play old time-y music (in ensembles with fiddles and other instruments) and give hands-on lessons to the kiddies, etc.

Thanks Bobby! I live in Wilkes County, NC. I was just wondering. I know VA has it's own style of playing and dulcimer, and then there's the Galax Style. I saw an exhibition of dulcimers in VA a couple of years ago. I grew up in NC, but about 20 minutes from Danville, VA and have always loved VA. So... thanks for all your help.

There's also the Cumberland Gap Dulcimer Gathering an hour or less west of Abingdon.

I also googled a dulcimer club in Abingdon. The Mountain Strings Dulcimer Club. A lady named Karen Boone with a contact email of: karenboone10@aol.com is listed to contact for info.

Hi ReVonda,

I live about an hour and a half north of Abingdon. I don't know of anything directly in Abingdon, but I think there's maybe a group or two in the Kingsport/Johnson City/Bristol Tennessee area, which is around 30 minutes either direction.

I have a main blog for Traditional style mountain dulcimer playing here: Mountain Dulcimer Noter-drone Blog This is an old style of playing where you only fret your notes on the melody string, while letting the drones strings ring open. In my blog, I express my personal views about playing, I offer free TAB and free beginner videos, and I try to help beginners understand in a very basic simple way the 'mysteries' of playing the mountain dulcimer in traditional modal noter/drone style.
